The Vanderbilt is a historic downtown mansion in Newport, Rhode Island once owned by the businessman and scion of the same name. The stately residence has now been reinterpreted for the modern era as a lively and stylish social destination and luxury hotel.

While crafting the design for the reimagined Vanderbilt Hotel, SWOON, the studio viewed the rich history of the mansion and the iconic characters who inhabited its walls through a modern lens. We embraced the mansion’s Georgian architecture with the simplicity and honesty of American colonial design, and then layered in pieces inspired by the mansion’s namesake owner, Alfred Vanderbilt.
